What is Creative Insight Counseling?
Put simply, it is a form of counseling where the client and therapist work together to develop a creative response to life’s challenges based on insights gained from dreams, recognized patterns in family history, various synchronicities in daily experience, and creative activities chosen by the client and supported by the therapist.
About Our Practice…
Creative Insight Counseling & Consultation, LLC is a business formed by my wife and I for the purpose of providing a needed service that enhances creativity and mental health for those around us. While the immediate goal of the services we provide involves the reduction of suffering, the long-term goal is an enhanced realization of the full potential of our clients for creative and meaningful living and loving. Susan and I have taken a long and winding path to arrive at this moment. For both of us that journey has involved love and hope, joy and suffering, and lots of tender grace applied with generosity from those around us, encouraging and cheering us along.
Each of our clients is also on a life trek. It is our distinct privilege to come alongside for a while and bear witness to important life changes, taking note of the various thoughts and feelings that accompany difficult decisions. When we share helpful insights that lead to profound understandings, those comments are mostly derived from careful listening and observation, from being completely aware and in the moment with our clients as they communicate. We believe that this kind of compassionate attention and authentic engagement pave the way for the series of incremental insights that can spark life changing decisions, leading, in turn, to new, more effective forms of communication and behavior. We ultimately believe that each client has the potential to live a more meaningful life by making conscious decisions to live with honest integrity and creative courage. It is our desire to support that kind of transformation, to encourage more creative living and deeply committed loving.

One only needs to spend time with children to realize that art and play are their natural languages, and to witness these forms of expression, is to be able to understand what children cannot verbalize with words. “The child must know that he is a miracle, that since the beginning of the world there hasn’t been, and until the end of the world, there will never be, another child like him. You do not lose your value or your preciousness when you grow to be an adult. You must work, we all must work, to make the world worthy of its children.” Pablo Casals
How do I know if I need counseling or consultation services?
Are you going through a difficult time of loss or upheaval and change? Do you have strained or troubled relationships, painful or difficult thoughts or emotions? Are you looking to be more creative, a better artist, or maybe just seeking to live a more fulfilling life? Our overall goal is to work with our clients to realize their full potential to live and love with creativity and insight. For clients going through a difficulties in their relationships we provide marriage, relationship, or family counseling, for those with troubling thoughts and emotions, we provide targeted, evidence-based psychological therapy as needed to help them adjust effectively and move on. For those who simply want to live a more satisfying life, we provide motivational and insight-oriented dialog to help clients deepen their understanding of themselves and their loved ones, and creativity training to help them get on with the work realizing their personal and creative goals.
Do you work with children or adolescents?
Sure! We work with people of all ages, from the very young to the very old. Our methods differ depending on client needs. Often, younger clients work well with art therapy or play therapy modalities. We provide services appropriate to the abilities, strengths, preferences, and proclivities of our clients. There are different protocols that cover our approach to family therapy when children, especially younger children, are involved. We usually include family sessions and take a systems approach to resolving communications and parenting issues.
What about fees and insurance?
The financial cost of the services is an important factor to consider when deciding whether to work with a counselor or consultant. With one major exception, BCBS, we don’t directly bill insurance companies, in large part because we want you to maintain greater control over your treatment choices and personal records. We’d love to explain the process of getting counseling started and discuss your payment options as well.
How does this work?
We will meet for an initial consultation to gain an understanding of your particular situation. After conversation, we will determine a course of action and present appropriate options for services. In follow up sessions we will gather more background information and provide some helpful information as well as training in skills that accelerate progress toward your goals. Depending on the kind of work we do, the length and frequency of our sessions will vary as needed.
What is a creative consultation?
Creative consultations take various forms depending on the needs of clients. In a visual arts coaching context, they usually take the form of a critique, held in the office or in the client’s studio, looking at original work or via Skype from a remote location. These are usually followed up by some form of written summary review with recommendations. In a broader personal development and coaching context, creative consultations involve exercises, journalling, and homework assignments designed to stimulate a fresh perspective and a more creative response to problem solving, relationships, and living in general.
Is counseling confidential?
In Spartanburg, it’s common to run into people you know, which is all well and good, but when you meet your counselor when out and about, you need to know that your personal information will remain personal and the things you share in private will stay that way. In fact, we believe that no one needs to know that you are in therapy unless you choose to make that known. We will not initiate a conversation unless you do, and even then we will never divulge the nature of our therapeutic role in your life. We take your confidentiality very seriously and take steps to assure
Counseling protected by federal law and our professional license requires that we behave in an ethical manner to guard your privacy. We will endeavor to exceed these requirements. If you ask, we will be happy to tell you more and clarify any concerns prior to beginning therapy.
Do you offer Phone or Video (Skype) counseling or consultation sessions?
Sure thing! When the specific needs and abilities of a client indicate that distance counseling or consultation is needed, we can and do provide those services unless a client’s insurance refuses to cover that form of service. Standard counseling and consultation fees and policies apply.
